What a callback is worth
A callback is a door where somebody answered, did not buy, and gave you a reason to return. It is worth more than a fresh door because the expensive part has already happened: someone opened the door, listened, and did not end it. It is also the outcome most often lost, because collecting it depends on you being somewhere specific on a specific day.
What separates a callback from a no
A no is finished. A callback is a conversation that stopped for a reason that has an expiry date: they were busy, the other decision-maker was out, they wanted to think about it. The reason matters because it tells you when returning is worth anything.
"Come back sometime" is not a callback. A callback has a time attached, even a vague one, and the vaguer it is the sooner you should test it.
Why it is worth more than a fresh door
Everything a fresh door still has to clear, a callback has already cleared. Somebody was home, they opened the door, they did not immediately end it, and they know what you are selling. That is several filters deep into a funnel that is mostly filter.
Reps still consistently prefer fresh doors, because a new street feels like work and a return visit feels like admin.
Why it is the outcome most often lost
A fresh door is available whenever you are. A callback is available on one day, and if you are not there it quietly becomes a no. The failure is almost never a decision to abandon it; it is a Thursday that got busy.
That is a systems problem rather than a discipline problem, which is why the fix is a list that surfaces itself rather than a resolution to try harder.
Common questions
- Is a callback the same as a lead?
- A callback is a specific kind of lead with a return date attached. The date is the part that makes it perishable and the part most systems handle badly.
- How much is a callback worth?
- More than a fresh door, because the qualifying already happened. We do not have a defensible multiplier and would rather not invent one; your own numbers will show you the ratio in your trade.
- What if they did not give me a time?
- Set one yourself and go sooner rather than later. A callback with no time decays faster than one with a date, because nothing about it is anchored for either of you.
