Negotiating your split

The percentage is often the least negotiable term and the one reps focus on. Chargeback window, draw terms, territory quality and lead support are frequently more flexible and worth more. The strongest time to negotiate is after you have a record, which is precisely when most reps stop trying.

Negotiate the terms, not the headline

Companies protect the commission percentage because it is visible across the team and changing it for one rep creates problems. The surrounding terms are less visible and often more valuable.

Territory is compensation

A denser, better-worked territory is worth more than a couple of points on the rate, and it is easier for a manager to grant. Reps rarely ask for it because it does not feel like a pay conversation.

Timing

A rep with a documented record has something to negotiate with. This is one of the more concrete arguments for tracking your own numbers, and for keeping a record that stays yours when you change companies.

Common questions

Is commission negotiable in door-to-door?
The percentage often is not. Chargeback terms, draw structure and territory frequently are, and they can be worth more.
When should I ask?
When you have a record to point at. Before you have produced anything, you are negotiating on assertion.
What if they say no?
Ask what would need to be true for it to be yes. That converts a refusal into a target you can hit.
