Political canvassing
Political canvassing uses the same coverage mechanics as sales canvassing and a different conversation, a different legal framework and a different definition of success. Campaigns are usually identifying and turning out support rather than closing a transaction, which changes what gets recorded at the door and how the area is re-worked.
Same coverage, different objective
A campaign is generally trying to identify supporters and get them to turn out. That is two objectives across two visits, so the record at the door is a classification rather than a sale, and the second visit is scheduled by the calendar rather than by the conversation.
Different rules
Political canvassing has protections in some jurisdictions that commercial soliciting does not, which is why campaigns sometimes work areas and hours a sales team could not. Do not carry assumptions in either direction between the two.
What sales can borrow
The coverage discipline, mostly. Campaigns have run canvassing at scale for a long time and are unusually rigorous about knowing which addresses have been contacted and what was recorded, because the deadline is fixed and unmovable.
Common questions
- Is political canvassing the same as sales canvassing?
- The coverage mechanics are close to identical. The conversation, the legal framework and the definition of success are not.
- Do no-soliciting signs apply to campaigns?
- It varies by jurisdiction, and political speech is treated differently from commercial soliciting in some of them. Check locally rather than assuming either way.
- Can KnockMode be used for a campaign?
- The map, routes and per-address records work for any door-to-door activity. Nothing in it is built specifically for voter contact.
